Arckit’s open-ended building platform allows you to bring iconic architectural gems to life from around the world as never before. This Arckit set of components and step-by-step video enables you to build an Arckit model representation of Tadao Andos' masterpiece Church of the Light.
Tadao Ando is a Japanese self-taught architect whose approach to architecture and landscape was categorized as "critical regionalism".
He created Church of The Light in 1989 in the city of Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture. It is an architecture of duality – the dual nature of existence – solid/void, light/dark, stark/serene. The coexisting differences leave the church void of any, and all, ornament creating a pure, unadorned space.
The space of the chapel is defined by light, the strong contrast between light and solid. In the chapel light enters from behind the altar from a cross cut in the concrete wall that extends vertically from floor to ceiling and horizontally from wall to wall, aligning perfectly with the joints in the concrete. At this intersection of light and solid the occupant is meant to become aware of the deep division between the spiritual and the secular within himself or herself.
We’d recommend using the Arckit Building Plate as a base to build from and for displaying your creation (the Building Plate is not included in the kit). Please note, if you use the building plate, there is no need to include the Links to the underside of the model as indicated in the step-by-step video. Enjoy!
Please note: Over the years we have created representations of iconic buildings to showcase Arckit’s vast capabilities as a modular scale model building platform. Due to popular demand, we have put together the components necessary to build Arckit representations of some of these structures, including The Church of the Light. To avoid any disappointment, please note that this step-by-step building kit is plainly packaged without any print, brochure or reference to the building. It comes in a white Arckit box with only the components, packed in separate eco-friendly bags. As we strive to be environmentally friendly, we have not included printed instructions in the box, however you can find them in the listing online – both as a PDF and as a video tutorial.
